The Machakos county government has set aside Sh120 million to support the education of bright but needy students in secondary schools and university students in the county.
The more than 32,346 beneficiaries of the governor’s scholarship programme are from Secondary schools, colleges and university students.
Speaking yesterday at Kithunguini Primary School ground in Kathiani sub- county, during the launch of secondary schools bursary of 2026, Governor Wavinya Ndeti said the cash caters for students’ fees from needy families in various schools in the county to ensure they do not drop out of school for lack of school fees.
“We have set aside Sh120 million bursary which will go to education bursaries targeting all needy students in the county to ensure none of them fails to achieve their academic goals due to lack of fees,” said the governor.
The governor said the bursary, which would be disbursed annually to students, was aimed at alleviating the financial burden on students and their families.
The county boss added, “The investments we are making in education are designed to give you the best opportunities to succeed.
She said her office was committed to promoting education in the region and told the students to work hard in order to achieve their dreams since their parents looked towards them.
“We cannot achieve our development goals if we fail to invest in education because education is the best investment which can be given to children to help them in their future lives,” the governor added.
She added that the initiative was part of her administration’s broader commitment to promoting educational access, academic excellence, and youth empowerment.
Also speaking was the deputy governor, Francis Mwangangi, who called on teachers, students, parents, sponsors and locals to work towards registering better academic performance.
He also called on parents in the county to invest more in education for their children for a better future and support measures aimed at improving education standards.
“It is important for parents to remember they have a huge role to play in supporting the improvement of education standards,” she added.

“Her Excellency, Governor Ndeti, is determined to build on the foundation already laid to ensure more students benefit from this bursary in the county,” the deputy governor added.
