Six senior officers at the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) are set to be named to the Regional Directors (RD) positions after successfully passing interviews conducted recently.
Those to be promoted include county directors Hassan Abukar (Makueni), Catherine Mwenda (Nyeri), Dr Esther Musani (West Pokot), Nzuvu Nzioka (TSC Headquarters), and Boniface Okumu (TSC Headquarters).
Also promoted is Dr Samwel Marigat, who is the current Nairobi Regional Director, in what appears to be a formality as he was already serving in the RD post.
The officers, who are currently serving at the level of directors at the TSC Secretariat and in the field, will now be promoted to Senior Deputy Directors (SDD) at TSC Grade 4 (Job Group ‘S’).
Up to recently, county and regional directors have been at Grade 5 (Job Group ‘R’), but with the implementation of the new Career Progression Guidelines (CPG) for Secretariat Staff, the latter group were moved to Job Group ‘S’.
TSC advertised for six RD positions along with other field vacancies in October last year. Those shortlisted for interviews were invited between March and April this year.

RDs are an important cog in TSC’s organisational structure. Those holding these positions wield immense power in field services.
They supervise all county directors in their regions and those below them in the pecking order.

They also make decisions on teacher management functions in their respective areas. Most crucial of these roles is the deployment and transfer of teachers.
