Bungoma County has received a fresh consignment of digital learning devices under the EIDU programme, bolstering efforts to integrate technology into Early Childhood Education and improve learning outcomes across the region.
The devices, handed over during a ceremony in Bungoma, are expected to enhance digital literacy among learners in Early Childhood Development Education (ECDE) centres while equipping teachers with modern tools to support instruction.
Governor Kenneth Lusaka hailed the initiative as a critical step in modernising the county’s education sector, noting that digital platforms are key to preparing learners for future demands.
“This support marks a significant milestone in our journey to transform learning. By embracing digital platforms, we are equipping our children with essential 21st-century skills for a competitive future,” he said.
According to county data, 135 ECDE centres are currently funded by the Bungoma County Government, while an additional 409 centres are supported through partnerships with development agencies under the programme. However, 276 centres are yet to be onboarded, underscoring existing gaps in access to digital learning resources.
EIDU team lead Hanifar Oathman raised concern over disparities in device distribution, calling for accelerated expansion of the programme.

“The current device-to-learner ratio stands at 1:30 in donor-supported schools and 1:23 in county-funded institutions. There is an urgent need to fast-track onboarding to ensure equitable access for all learners,” she said.
Oathman noted that the introduction of digital tools is reshaping classroom experiences by making lessons more interactive and enabling real-time tracking of learner progress. She added that the initiative is also laying a foundation for learners transitioning to lower primary education by equipping them with basic digital competencies.
The county government indicated that the devices will be distributed across ECDE centres, complementing ongoing investments in teacher capacity building and digital infrastructure.
Officials reiterated their commitment to strengthening partnerships aimed at expanding inclusive and technology-driven education in Bungoma.
Among those present at the handover were County Executive Committee Member for Education and Vocational Training Eng. Agness Wachiye and Chief Officer George Kombo.
