Plans to expand higher education access in Kiminini constituency gained momentum on Monday, Apriil 27, after area Member of Parliament (MP) Maurice Bisau Kakai presided over the groundbreaking ceremony for St Patrick’s Waitaluk Senior School, a project linked to the planned establishment of a university college in the area.

The new school, which will replace the current institution ahead of its relocation, is planned to include 12 classrooms, an administration block, an ICT hub, and a modern ablution facility.

According to the lawmaker, the project forms part of a broader infrastructural upgrade aimed at improving access to quality education while accommodating upcoming developments.

Officials said the relocation is necessary to create space for the establishment of a constituent college of Egerton University at the current site of St Patrick’s Waitaluk Senior School. The proposed university college is expected to admit its first cohort of up to 5,000 students next year.

Addressing residents and education stakeholders during the ceremony, Kakai said the twin projects would transform Kiminini into a key education hub, enhancing both secondary and tertiary learning opportunities.

“This development is not only about infrastructure but about securing the future of our learners and expanding access to university education within our locality,” he said.

Local leaders and residents welcomed the initiative, expressing optimism that the university project will spur economic growth through increased demand for housing, retail services, and employment opportunities.

Education stakeholders noted that the new secondary school facilities are expected to meet modern standards and support digital learning, easing pressure on existing institutions in the region.

Construction of the school is set to begin immediately, with completion timelines aligned to ensure a smooth transition ahead of the university college’s anticipated intake next year.
