Hosts Kilifi Teachers FC edged out Turkana Teachers FC 1-0 in a thrilling final to clinch the national football champions title at the 7th Edition of the Kenya National Teachers’ Sports Championship held at Malindi High School yesterday.
In a tightly contested encounter marked by tactical discipline and high intensity, Kilifi capitalised on home advantage and unwavering crowd support to secure the solitary but decisive goal that separated the two sides.
The victory sparked jubilant celebrations as the hosts sealed a memorable triumph on their own soil.
The championship, which brings together teachers from across the country to compete in various sporting disciplines, once again showcased not only sports talent but also unity and camaraderie within the teaching fraternity
For Kilifi County, this year’s edition will be remembered as historic, with multiple teams rising to the occasion.
Kilifi Teachers FC’s path to glory was defined by resilience, teamwork and consistency.
Throughout the tournament, they displayed solid defensive organisation and clinical finishing, qualities that ultimately carried them to the final whistle as deserved champions.
Turkana Teachers FC put up a spirited fight, but Kilifi’s composure under pressure proved decisive.
Beyond football, Kilifi County had even more reason to celebrate. The Kilifi Men’s Netball Team and the Kilifi Ladies Netball Team also emerged champions in their respective categories, completing a rare and remarkable clean sweep for the coastal county.
The triple triumph underscored Kilifi’s growing dominance in teachers’ sports and reflected months of preparation and commitment.
Speaking after the victory, KUPPET Kilifi Chairman Chiguba Morris Nyale lauded the teams for their discipline and dedication, describing the achievement as a proud moment for the entire county.
He noted that the success was not accidental but the result of structured organisation, teamwork, and sustained support.
The unionist gave special recognition to former Gender Cabinet Secretary Aisha Jumwa, who is the chairperson of the Kenya Roads Board, whose recent sponsorship of the Kilifi Teachers Football League played a pivotal role in nurturing talent and promoting competitive spirit among teachers.
“Her backing provided a strong foundation that enabled our teams to prepare adequately for national competition,” he remarked.
He also applauded Stanbic Bank for its timely support, which further boosted morale and facilitated the teams’ preparations ahead of the championship.
The Kenya National Teachers’ Sports Championship continues to serve as a vital platform for promoting physical fitness, mental wellness and unity among educators.
