TSC warns teachers against gambling amid rising debt concerns

TSC Western Region Director Victoria Muoka addresses school heads, warning teachers against gambling and urging financial discipline.

Teachers from the Western region have been called upon not to engage in gambling activities to avoid falling into financial problems.

Western Region Teachers Service Commission Director Victoria Muoka said many teachers have fallen prey to betting, hence falling into financial quagmires.

Muoka said some teachers have fallen into debt traps after getting addicted to betting.

She said several teachers have been asking to be moved from their current stations since they can no longer meet their financial obligations.

Muoka was speaking during the Busia County, Kenya Secondary School Heads meeting in Kisumu.

At the same time, called on school heads to be collaborative in their approaches in the wake of the new education curriculum.

She said Competency-Based Education needs the support of all stakeholders.

She said parents and board members alike should be consulted as the curriculum takes root.

Muoka said school heads should be all-inclusive, irrespective of the status of some workers at their stations.

The director said teacher appraisals should only be undertaken by serving heads and not those who have exited service.

“In the event a school head has retired, that role should be carried out by the deputy or a senior teacher,” she said.
