A university lecturer, Dr. Juma Musungu, has called for greater transparency and fairness in the allocation of bursaries by the Webuye East National Government Constituency Development Fund (NG-CDF) amid rising concerns over alleged inequities in the process.

Speaking during a fundraising event at Mihuu Senior School, Dr. Musungu urged the fund’s administrators to adopt clear and accountable mechanisms to ensure that support reaches deserving students.

The don warned that inconsistencies in bursary distribution risk locking out needy learners, particularly those from disadvantaged backgrounds who rely on the funds to remain in school.

“Bursaries are intended to support the most vulnerable in society. Any form of unfairness defeats the very purpose of the fund,” he said.

He called on the CDF committee to publish beneficiary lists and criteria used in awarding the bursaries, noting that transparency would enhance public confidence and reduce complaints from parents and guardians.

Dr. Musungu’s remarks come against the backdrop of growing disquiet among residents of Webuye East, with some alleging that the bursary process lacks openness and fails to adequately target deserving cases.

Education stakeholders present at the event echoed the concerns, urging authorities to streamline the process and introduce stronger oversight measures. They noted that equitable access to bursaries is critical in promoting retention and academic success among students from low-income households.

The lecturer spoke during a fund drive aimed at raising resources for the construction of a dormitory at Mihuu Senior School. The project is expected to ease congestion and improve accommodation for students, many of whom currently face challenges related to limited boarding facilities.

Local leaders and well-wishers who attended the event pledged support towards the initiative, describing it as a key step in enhancing the school’s learning environment.

Dr. Musungu reiterated the need for integrity in the management of public education funds, emphasizing that fair distribution of bursaries remains central to achieving equal opportunities in education.
