West Pokot County is drawing closer to getting its first University after county officially handed over the Keringet University renovation works to Mtelo Contractors, marking a defining moment in the journey toward restoring the institution.

The event was witnessed by the County Executive Committee Member for Agriculture, Wilfred Longronyang, alongside technical and procurement teams tasked with overseeing the project to completion.

This comes after various consultative meetings held by both county and national government leaders on the venue for the establishment of the pioneer University within the region.

With the renovation works now underway, a new chapter is unfolding. By the end of the year, the facility is expected to be ready to receive students under the University of Nairobi.

This partnership brings with it not only credibility but also the assurance of quality education that meets national standards. More importantly, it brings higher education closer to the people—within reach, within community, and within possibility.

According to the officials, the impact of this development is likely to be profound as students who once had to travel long distances in search of education will now have the option of studying closer to home.

This proximity will not only reduce costs but also provide a supportive environment where families can remain actively involved in their children’s academic journeys. It will also ease the emotional burden that often comes with separation, particularly for first-generation university students.

Beyond the direct benefits to learners, the revival of Keringet University is expected to ignite economic activity across the surrounding area.

Small-scale traders, shop owners, boda boda operators, and landlords will all find new opportunities. Markets will expand, incomes will improve, and the overall economic landscape of the area will begin to shift. In this way, the university becomes not just an academic institution, but a driver of livelihoods and local development.

As the renovation progresses, there is a growing sense of anticipation. Each brick laid, each wall restored, and each facility upgraded brings Keringet closer to its rebirth. What was once a symbol of stagnation is rapidly transforming into a beacon of renewal.
