Cardinal Otunga Girls’ Senior School in Bungoma County will host the 2026 English Contest and Symposium on Saturday, March 14, bringing together secondary school students for a full day of competitive academic engagement and intellectual exchange.
The event, which begins at 8:00 a.m., is expected to draw teams from across the region. Organisers say the contest will feature separate categories for Form Three and Form Four students, each designed to test proficiency in spoken English, literary interpretation, and grammatical accuracy.
Form Three contestants will compete in Oral Skills, Oral Literature, Poetry, and Grammar. For Form Four students, the categories include Oral Skills, Poetry, and Grammar, alongside analysis of an excerpt from Fathers of Nations by P.B. Vitta, one of the set books in the secondary school curriculum. The inclusion of the text is intended to sharpen comprehension and critical analysis skills as candidates prepare for national examinations.

Schools have been allowed to register multiple teams, with each team comprising 10 students. A registration fee of Sh2,500 per team will be payable upon arrival. Participants have been advised to carry packed lunch, as the contest will run throughout the day.
The symposium will provide a platform for learners to discuss emerging issues in language and literature. Organisers say this will help students refine their public speaking skills while encouraging intellectual exchange among peers.
Education stakeholders note that such contests play a vital role in promoting academic excellence, confidence, and mastery of communication skills. They argue that the March event will not only test knowledge but also nurture creativity and teamwork among participating schools.
