Kenya is mourning the death of Johanna Ngeno, the Member of Parliament for Emurua Dikirr Constituency, who died following a helicopter crash in Nandi County.

Johanna Ngeno had travelled to Nandi to attend celebrations marking 35 years in the music industry by Kalenjin artist Kim Kim.

The event, which had drawn leaders, fans, and members of the public, was meant to honour the musician’s long-standing contribution to the local entertainment scene before tragedy struck.

Details indicate that the helicopter he was travelling in crashed in Nandi County.

Authorities have launched investigations to establish the cause of the accident.

How Bad Weather Can Bring Down a Helicopter

They can land almost anywhere and are often used to reach remote areas.

However, they are also more vulnerable to bad weather compared to large passenger planes. When the weather changes suddenly, a helicopter can face serious danger.

One major problem is poor visibility

During heavy rain, thick fog, or low clouds, a pilot may not see clearly. Most helicopters in Kenya operate under Visual Flight Rules, which means the pilot must see the ground to fly safely. If visibility drops, the pilot can become confused or accidentally fly into trees, hills, or power lines. This is one common cause of crashes.

 Strong winds are another danger

Helicopters are lighter and more sensitive to wind than large airplanes. Sudden gusts can push the aircraft off balance. In some cases, strong winds can affect *the tail rotor* , which controls direction. If the tail rotor is affected, the helicopter may spin or lose control.

Thunderstorms are even more dangerous. They bring heavy rain, lightning, and powerful air movements. A strong downdraft , which is air pushing downward , can force a helicopter toward the ground very quickly. If the pilot cannot recover in time, a crash may occur.

When flying into thick clouds or heavy rain, a pilot may lose a clear sense of direction. The body may give false signals, making the pilot think the helicopter is level when it is actually turning or descending. Without clear visual reference, this can lead to loss of control.

In simple terms, bad weather affects visibility, balance, lift, and pilot judgment. Because helicopters often fly at lower altitudes, they are more exposed to sudden weather changes. For this reason, weather assessment is very important before and during every flight.

Understanding these risks helps us appreciate why aviation safety depends heavily on *good weather* conditions and careful decision-making.
