The Annual Super Eight School Tournament burst into life in Kakamega with emphatic victories, tense draws and dramatic twists as Western Kenya’s football heavyweights battled for early supremacy.
Action unfolded at the iconic Bukhungu Stadium and the nearby Kakamega School Grounds, where fans were treated to high-tempo matches and clinical finishing.
The tournament features eight teams: Butere Boys High School, Kakamega High School (Green Commandos), St Anthony’s Boys High School, Kitale (Solidarity Boys), St Mary’s School, Yala, Shanderema Secondary School, Kirangari Secondary School, Kisumu Day High School and Highway Secondary School.
Shanderema Secondary School, who replaced national football champions St Joseph Boys High School, Kitale, after their withdrawal from competition, stole the headlines with a commanding 5-0 thrashing of Kirangari, one of the tournament’s most dominant displays so far.
The resounding victory marked a strong statement from the side, who were drafted in as late replacements following the withdrawal of reigning national champions St Joseph’s Boys High School, Kitale.
St Mary’s Yala also stamped its authority on the competition. They edged Butere Boys 1-0 in a closely contested match before returning to beat Kirangari 3-1, strengthening their position as serious title contenders.
Kakamega Boys draw
In a highly anticipated clash, Kakamega High School, popularly known as Green Commandos, played to a 1-1 draw against St Anthony’s Boys High School, Kitale — the Solidarity Boys.
The evenly balanced encounter showcased tactical discipline and attacking intent from both sides.
The tournament continues tomorrow with more group-stage fixtures, as teams intensify their push for semifinal spots.
