Infrastructure crisis has hit Matulo FYM Comprehensive School in Webuye West Sub-County, Bungoma County after several classrooms declared unsafe due to severe structural damage, forcing hundreds of learners to attend classes under trees.
Speaking at the school, Board of Management Chairperson Moses Khaemba said the school is facing an acute infrastructure crisis that has disrupted normal learning.

He noted that although the Webuye West NG-CDF constructed three new classrooms to ease congestion, other existing blocks have developed deep cracks and are in a deteriorating state, posing a serious risk to both learners and teachers.
“We appreciate the NG-CDF for supporting us with three classrooms. However, the remaining structures are unsafe and cannot accommodate learners,” Khaemba said during a media briefing.

As a safety measure, the administration relocated affected classes outdoors. The move, however, has exposed pupils to harsh weather conditions, with learning frequently disrupted by rain and extreme heat.
Teachers say the unpredictable environment has affected concentration and slowed syllabus coverage. Parents have also voiced concern over the safety and wellbeing of their children.

According to the BoM Chairman, the rising enrolment has compounded the problem, stretching the limited safe learning space and deepening fears over possible setbacks in academic performance.
Khaemba has appealed to well-wishers, development partners and relevant authorities to urgently support the construction of additional classrooms.
“Our learners deserve a safe and conducive learning environment. We are calling on all stakeholders to step in and help,” he said.
The situation highlights persistent infrastructure challenges facing public schools in parts of Bungoma County, where growing student populations continue to strain available facilities.
