The Kenya National Drama Festival (KNDF) will pilot the use of standardised stage backdrops (backcloths) during the 2026 National Drama and Film Festival, marking a significant shift in stage presentation rules.
In a communication issued under the auspices of the Ministry of Education, festival organisers referenced Article 14.4, specifically sub-articles 14.4.1, 14.4.2, and 14.4.3 of the 2026 Rules and Regulations, which address the standardisation of stage backdrops.
According to the notice, the revised rule on stage sets—particularly the use of standard backdrops—will be piloted exclusively at the national level during the 2026 festival.
The pilot phase will be conducted in selected halls to allow for a smooth transition and proper evaluation of the new requirements.
The organisers noted that findings from the pilot will inform future decisions and possible broader implementation of the standardised backcloth policy across all levels of the festival.

However, regional festivals and all lower levels have been advised to continue applying the existing stage regulations until further official communication is issued.
This means that for now, schools competing at sub-county, county, and regional levels will proceed under the current guidelines regarding stage setup and backdrops.
The move is seen as part of ongoing efforts to enhance uniformity, fairness, and professionalism in national-level stage productions.
The standardised backdrops are expected to create a more controlled performance environment, minimise logistical challenges, and ensure equity among participating institutions.
The notice was signed by Janet Langat, Executive Secretary of the Kenya National Drama and Film Festival, underscoring the festival’s commitment to structured reforms to improve the quality and management of performances.
The Kenya National Drama Festival remains one of the country’s premier co-curricular events, bringing together learners from across Kenya to showcase talent in drama, film, spoken word, and other creative arts disciplines.
