The Karatina University has refuted reports suggesting that the institution intends to introduce a gate pass system aimed at barring students with outstanding fee balances from accessing the campus.

Speaking anonymously, a senior staff member described the claims as unfounded and inconsistent with the University’s policies and values.

He clarified that access to the campus remains unchanged and is strictly based on the presentation of a valid student identification card.

The ID system, he noted, is not linked to fee payment status and does not restrict students facing financial challenges.

According to the source, while proposals related to tightening access controls may have been mentioned informally in the past, there has been no formal plan to implement such measures.

He emphasized that the university’s leadership would not support a move that risks disrupting students’ academic progress.

The staff member pointed to Vice-Chancellor Prof. Linus Gitonga as a strong defender of student welfare.

He described the Vice-Chancellor as deeply committed to ensuring that no learner is locked out of academic spaces due to financial hardship, particularly those from low-income backgrounds.

“For him, a student missing class is a serious concern. He consistently listens to student concerns and prioritises access to education above administrative pressure.” He said.

In addition, the staff member praised the University’s digital systems, noting that Karatina University is among the few institutions with a reliable and fully functional student portal. Through the portal, students can easily view their financial statements and household contribution details without having to queue at the finance office for manual verification or clearance stamps.

He reaffirmed that Karatina University remains an inclusive, student-centered institution committed to supporting learners from all backgrounds.

The administration, he said, continues to focus on solutions that promote access, academic continuity, and a positive learning environment rather than restrictive measures.
