Maseno School is set to host a high-impact academic workshop targeting teachers of English and Literature as the country accelerates its transition from the 8-4-4 system to the Competency-Based Education (CBE) framework.

In a formal invitation  letter dated January 29, 2026, and forwarded through the Sub-County Director of Education, Kisumu West, the institution called upon principals to release their English and Literature teachers for the one-day professional engagement scheduled for Saturday, March 14, 2026, at 9:00 a.m. in the school’s Staff Lounge.

Themed “Mind Shift from 8-4-4 to Competency-Based Education (CBE)”, the workshop seeks to recalibrate pedagogical approaches in line with evolving curriculum demands and emerging assessment trends at the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) level.

According to the circular signed by Head of Department Jackline Juma and Workshop Coordinator Jack Sisso, the forum will bring together seasoned examiners and experienced tutors in English and Literature.

The organisers say the aim is to equip teachers with practical insights on testing patterns, instructional methodologies and professional growth opportunities under the new education dispensation.

Among the key topics lined up for discussion are emerging trends in testing English papers 101/1, 101/2 and 101/3 at KCSE, understanding the teaching and assessment of English and Literature within the CBE structure, and exploring avenues for continuous professional development for teachers of English.

Education stakeholders view the workshop as timely, coming at a period when teachers across the country are grappling with the paradigm shift from content-heavy instruction to competency-based learning that emphasizes skills acquisition, creativity and learner-centered approaches.

The transition from 8-4-4 to CBE has fundamentally redefined classroom dynamics, assessment frameworks and teacher preparedness. English and Literature, being core subjects that anchor communication, critical thinking and analytical skills, remain central to the success of the new system.

By convening examiners and classroom practitioners under one roof, Maseno School aims to bridge the gap between policy formulation and classroom implementation. Participants are expected to gain clarity on assessment expectations, marking schemes and best practices that align with national standards.
