The Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) Trans Nzoia Executive Secretary George Wanjala has urged teachers to fully register as the union members in order to benefit from the services offered.
The call comes after majority of tutors were barred from participating during the teachers union elections in what was termed as teachers paying urgency fee and not union dues.
Speaking in Kitale after retaining his seat, Wanjala lamented that many teachers were locked out of the polls due to the technicality calling upon the educators to fill the union forms to have themselves duly members of the union.
Wanjala said the trade union is ready to advocate for the interest of teachers interest for better working conditions.
The unionist also called upon the teachers’ employer to fully restore the teachers’ deductions to union dues arguing that categorizing the monthly deductions of teachers as urgency is unfair labour practices to the teaching professionals.

He said KNUT has petitioned the TSC to fully convert the teachers’ deductions to union dues saying the move will enable tutors to enjoy full benefits of the trade union.
“The national organ of the union has formally written to the employer to convert the deductions automatically to union dues. It does not make sense to deduct money from our payslips by force and give them funny name that will not enable members enjoy full services,” he remarked.
