The Ministry of Education, (MoE) has announced that the Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC) will roll out electronic Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) certificates and an online verification system for candidates who sat their exams from 2023.
Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Ogamba revealed the plan on Friday at KNEC offices in South C, saying the initiative seeks to modernise examination management, reduce operational costs, and align Kenya’s education sector with global digital standards.
“The digital certificates will enhance security, efficiency and environmental sustainability.” He said
He noted that the new system will improve access to academic documents while strengthening data protection measures.

KNEC is expected to pilot the programme by the end of February before implementing it nationwide. The council clarified that electronic certificates will not replace physical ones.
Candidates will still be required to retain their paper certificates for official purposes, including job applications, with additional details to be released during the pilot phase.
The Council will also upgrade its online verification platform to enable employers, universities, and other institutions to confirm the authenticity of certificates.
The move is aimed at curbing fraud and boosting confidence in Kenya’s academic qualifications locally and internationally.
If successful, the pilot programme could later be expanded to include certificates issued before 2023.
