The Ministry of Education, (MoE) has officially recognized lacrosse as a co-curricular activity in Kenya’s secondary schools, marking a major milestone in the expansion of sports and talent development in learning institutions across the country.

In a circular dated February 10, 2026, addressed to Regional and County Directors of Education, the State Department for Basic Education announced the inclusion of lacrosse into the Kenya Secondary Schools Sports Association (KSSSA) structure.

The move follows the sport’s growing popularity and successful showcase at the Kenya secondary schools championships over the past two years, as well as its participation in the 2025 East Africa Games.

The sport is being introduced through the Kenya Lacrosse Federation, led by its President, Cosmas Nabungolo, which has already facilitated the adoption of lacrosse in more than 40 secondary schools across six regions.

The federation is actively working to expand the sport to more schools and regions to achieve nationwide coverage.

To support the integration, the federation has established governance systems, trained coaches, and developed structured frameworks aimed at ensuring a smooth and well-regulated rollout of the game within the school sports system.

The initiative is expected to boost talent identification, enhance skills development and create structured competition among learners.

The circular further states that KSSSA will determine how lacrosse will be incorporated into school competitions, either through a pilot phase or a phased implementation framework.

Education officials have been urged to support the Kenya Lacrosse Federation in promoting and expanding the sport across their respective regions.

The directive was issued by Nelson M. Sifuna, the Head of the Directorate of Field Coordination and Co-Curricular Activities at the Ministry of Education, on behalf of the Principal Secretary for Basic Education.

A copy of the communication was also sent to Kenya Lacrosse Federation President Cosmas Nabungolo.

The inclusion of lacrosse is expected to diversify sporting opportunities for students, nurture emerging talent, and strengthen Kenya’s presence in international sports while promoting holistic education through co-curricular activities.
