Nandi Deputy Governor Yulita Mitei has come out strongly in defense of the Competency Based Education (CBE) system, urging Kenyans to remain patient as the new education framework continues to take shape.
Speaking in Kapsabet town, Mitei welcomed the CBE system, describing it as a long-term solution to the rising unemployment challenges facing the country’s youth.
“Competency Based Education is a remedy to the many unemployment problems bedeviling our young people. It equips learners with practical skills that are relevant to the job market,” said Mitei.
She acknowledged that the system has faced several challenges since its rollout but maintained that such difficulties are expected with any major reform.
“The challenges we are witnessing are normal. Any new system encounters teething problems before it fully stabilizes,” she noted.
Despite the concerns raised by various stakeholders, the deputy governor expressed confidence that the issues affecting CBE would be resolved, calling on Kenyans to give the system time and support.
“I am confident that the problems will be sorted out. What we need now is collective support from parents, teachers, and leaders to ensure the success of this system,” she added.

Mitei also lauded the national government for employing more teachers and releasing capitation funds on time, saying the moves would strengthen the education sector and improve learning outcomes.
“The employment of teachers and timely disbursement of capitation funds are positive steps that will go a long way in establishing and stabilizing education in our country,” she said.
Her sentiments were echoed by church leaders in Nandi County, who pledged to fully support government efforts aimed at improving education.
“As the church, we will continue to support initiatives that empower our children through education and skills development,” said one church leader.
The CBE system has, however, continued to attract criticism, with some opposition leaders accusing the government of mismanaging the education sector. Despite the criticism, leaders in Nandi County maintain that sustained support and patience will be key to realizing the full benefits of the new education system.
