Maseno School, Kenya’s oldest secondary institution, founded in 1906, has launched its Academic Strategic Plan for 2026 in a colourful ceremony marked by thanksgiving prayers and jubilation following outstanding performance in the 2025 national examinations.

The event, held at the school grounds in Kisumu County, brought together teachers, students, parents, alumni and education stakeholders to celebrate academic excellence while unveiling a roadmap for the future. School leaders described the thanksgiving prayers as a moment of reflection, attributing the institution’s success to “divine favour, discipline and teamwork” that have defined Maseno’s academic journey for more than a century.

Chief Principal Peter Owino said the new strategic plan is anchored on raising academic standards, holistic learner development and institutional sustainability. He announced that the school is targeting a mean grade of 11.0 and above in the coming years, alongside a 100 per cent transition to university for its candidates.

“We are proud of the 2025 results, which reaffirm Maseno School’s place as a centre of academic excellence. As we launch the 2026 Academic Strategic Plan, our focus is clear: to push the mean grade beyond 11.0 and ensure that every learner who completes Form Four secures a university place,” Owino said.

The principal attributed the strong 2025 performance to early syllabus coverage, disciplined learning culture, committed teachers and effective collaboration between the administration, the Board of Management and parents. He added that data-driven teaching, continuous assessment and mentorship programmes have been instrumental in improving learner outcomes.

The strategic plan outlines several priority areas, including strengthening science and STEM programmes, expanding academic mentorship, investing in teacher professional development and enhancing learner welfare. It also emphasizes values-based education, leadership training and co-curricular excellence, which Maseno School has historically championed.

Education stakeholders present lauded the school for blending tradition with innovation. Alumni representatives noted that Maseno’s consistent focus on discipline and academic rigor has enabled it to remain competitive nationally despite the changing education landscape.

Maseno School’s legacy as a national institution has long been tied to academic distinction, leadership formation and moral grounding. The launch of the 2026 Academic Strategic Plan, coming on the heels of impressive 2025 results, signals a renewed determination not only to sustain but surpass past achievements.
