The education sector in Kakamega North sub county is working around the clock to adhere to the Presidential directive that schools should register 100 per cent transition of Grade10 learners by the end of this week.
Speaking at the sub county offices, Director Rose Chisumi said already the sub county has admitted having recorded over 67.4% Grade 10 learners with the remaining percentage expected to be attained by the end of this week.
She however expressed concerns over the slow admission of learners despite the government through the Ministry of Education allowed admission of learners even without school fees uniform and admission key.
The change on the mode of admission came through after hundreds of thousands of learners failed to report to their respective senior schools due to distance, lack of school fees, uniforms prompting the ministry to allow Principals to admit any student who shows up at their institutions.
“We expected the intake to be faster now that all the academic requirements had been halted to allow the learners admission first, but still we are experiencing a slow paced admission process and we will engage the national government administrative officers (NGAO)’s to begin door to door inspections and those parents who will be found with their children and who are not set to enroll in technical and vocational training colleges (TVETS) will be held responsible” she cautioned.

Chisumi wondered why most parents were not prepared for the Grade 10 transition considering the slow and low admission pace being witnessed countrywide.
The director also pointed out that the admission data of girls in the graded 10 transition had decreased unlike before when the (8-4-4) system saw more girls transiting to form one than boys.
“We are very concerned with some schools which have admitted very low numbers of grade 10 students due to their poor performance in the national examination. Their fate will be decided by the ministry of education.” She said
On Grade 7 transition, she confirmed that the process was smooth and flowing on well across the sub county.
On the pathways to schools, Chisumi said only 7 schools including Malava Boys, Namagara, Kakoyi, Sawawa, Tande, Samitsi girls, all public schools with Chebwai (SDA) being the only private one to offer all the three pathways including STEM, social sciences and sports and arts with the majority 49 offering the first two pathways.
