Augustine Kundu Luketelo has retained his seat as Executive Secretary of the Kenya Union of Post-Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET) in Bungoma County after defeating his main challenger, outgoing Chairperson David Barasa, in the closely watched 2026 county elections.
The tightly contested race drew widespread interest from teachers across the county, with Luketelo’s victory widely viewed as a vote of confidence in his leadership at a time when educators are grappling with key challenges, including teacher deployment, promotion bottlenecks, and the implementation of education reforms.
In the chairperson’s race, Chemosit David from Mt Elgon was elected to lead the union, succeeding Barasa. His election was seen as strengthening regional balance within the county’s union leadership and signalling a renewed focus on grassroots engagement.
The elections also produced a full slate of officials to steer the union’s affairs. Ferdinand Wamalwa was elected Assistant Executive Secretary, while Busolo Lusweti clinched the position of Vice Chairperson. Financial oversight will be handled by Treasurer Faith Wafula, assisted by Vice Treasurer Lilian Chesari.
Other officials elected include Ashton Mukoche as Organising Secretary, Arnold Nyongesa as Secondary Secretary, Emmanuel Walela as Junior Secondary School (JSS) Secretary, and Benard Wangwa as Tertiary Secretary.
