Garissa High School is set to welcome at least 650 Grade 10 students as the transition to Senior School level under the Competency-Based Education (CBE) system begins this week.
Chief Principal Mohamud Mohamed Dubat confirmed that the school is fully prepared to accommodate the incoming learners and assured parents that the students will receive education tailored to their chosen career pathways.
Speaking during the admission exercise Dubat shared that 60% of the students will be placed in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM), 25% in Social Sciences, and 15% in Arts and Sports pathways.
“We are very much ready for Grade 10 students. These learners are more advanced because they already know what career path they want to pursue. In the past, students would only decide on their career after Form Four, but now they know much earlier, and we are ready to provide them with the education they need for their specific goals,” Dubat stated.
Despite acknowledging challenges such as the retooling of teachers and the lack of some necessary facilities, Dubat expressed confidence that the situation would improve over time.

“I know it’s a very challenging time because most of the teachers have not yet been retooled for Grade 10, but we are working on it step by step,” he added.
Under the new system, senior schools will consist of Grade 10, Form 3, and Form 4, with Form 3 and 4 set to be phased out within the next two years.
Dubat explained that this shift has led to a reduction in the student population from 1,600 to approximately 1,200 students.
He also noted that while there are gaps in terms of teacher retooling and infrastructure, he is optimistic that the government and development partners will provide the necessary support to build and equip additional facilities throughout the year.
