The Kenya Women Teachers Association (KEWOTA) yesterday unveiled the Mwalimu AI Training programme in Nairobi, marking a bold step toward equipping teachers with digital skills for the classroom. The initiative, delivered in partnership with M-KOPA and METIS, was launched at PCEA St. Andrews Church and is set to train thousands of teachers in 2026.
KEWOTA Chief Executive Officer Benter Opande described the training as unprecedented and timely, noting that it represents a deliberate effort to integrate technology into teaching for faster and more effective learning outcomes.
“This programme is designed to empower teachers to confidently embrace digital tools and transform classroom experiences,” she said.
During the interactive session, participants were introduced to Artificial Intelligence (AI) and its potential to support,not replace teachers. Trainers demonstrated how AI can save time, enhance lesson planning, and make learning more engaging for students.

KEWOTA Chairperson Modesta Akaki expressed optimism about the union’s digital direction, emphasising the importance of preparing members for the future. “As we move into 2026, we focus on strengthening the digital health of our members to be future-ready,” she said.
Akaki also thanked METIS for partnering with KEWOTA to drive the transformative initiative, underscoring the association’s commitment to ensuring teachers remain at the forefront of technological innovation in education.
The Mwalimu AI Training programme signals a new chapter for educators in Kenya, positioning them to harness digital tools and artificial intelligence in ways that enhance teaching and learning across the country.
