The Ministry of Education, (MoE) has revealed plans to upgrade 1000 Senior Schools to the National Status to counter the low Grade 10 enrollment countrywide.
According Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Ogamba, the ministry plans to ensure that every administrative ward has at least one senior school of the national status, the move that could result to 1450 C1 schools equal to the number of wars in the country.
Speaking recently, CS Ogamba revealed that the proposal was resulted by the weak interest from learners in the C4 Day Secondary schools, most risking closer due to low students turnout.

“We are waiting reports from the principals on the reporting rates, but we have already witnessed low students turnout in some C4 schools. This was expected as some of these schools were never chosen by any candidate at all during the selection process, so we have to decide what to do with them,” Ogamba said.
He added that some of the under-enrolled schools could be repurposed, while others may be upgraded to national status as part of the broader efforts to balance access, attractiveness and enrollment across the country.
This comes after several Day Secondary Schools classified as C4 schools experienced low Grade 10 turnout, as most parents scramble for national and county schools.
