The Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development (KICD) has released detailed timetabling guidelines for senior school learners under the Competency-Based Education (CBE), outlining lesson structures, subject allocations and daily routines for Grades 10, 11 and 12.
According to the guidelines, senior school learners will have eight lessons per day, translating to a total of 40 lessons per week, with each lesson lasting 40 minutes.
Core, elective and support subjects will form part of the daily schedule while Physical Education (PE) and Information Communication Technology (ICT) will be taught as single lessons.
Learners are expected to report to school at 8.00 a.m., with lessons beginning at 8.20 a.m. and ending at 3.20 p.m. Time between 8.00 a.m. and 8.20 a.m. will be reserved for roll call, assembly and class meetings.
Schools have also been directed to provide health breaks after every two lessons, including a one-hour lunch break.

In subject allocation, English, Kiswahili and Mathematics will each have five lessons per week while Community Service Learning (CSL) will take three lessons.
Learners will also select three elective subjects, each allocated five lessons weekly.
Support subjects include PE (3 lessons), ICT (2 lessons), Pastoral/Religious Instruction (1 lesson) and Learner Personal/Guidance Study (1 lesson).
KICD further directs schools to balance lessons between morning and afternoon sessions and avoid scheduling subjects with similar skills consecutively.
Only one double lesson per week is allowed for Arts, Sports Science and STEM subjects while non-formal programmes should be conducted after regular lessons.
The guidelines align with the Basic Education Regulations, 2015 and apply to both day and boarding schools.
KICD says the move aims to standardize learning time, promote learner wellbeing and ensure effective delivery of the CBC at senior school level as Kenya prepares for full transition into the new education system.
