The government has hired 24,000 additional teachers this month to fix staffing gaps in public schools, President William Ruto announced at Kabiruini grounds in Nyeri on Monday. He said the new tutors will help ensure no learner misses out on education due to shortages, reinforcing the ongoing transition to senior school for the first Grade 10 cohort.
Ruto added that the Ministry of Education’s budget has been increased from KSh500 billion in the last financial year to KSh702 billion to support reforms under the Competency‑Based Education Curriculum (CBE).
“We have taken concrete steps in reforming our education sector. This year, we have finalised the transition from junior school for the first cohort to senior school or Grade 10. We have increased the money for our education from Sh500 billion to Sh702 billion this year because education is important. It is the single biggest empowerment you can give the young people,” he said

Speaking during the National Youth Opportunities Towards Advancement (NYOTA) startup capital forum, the President said the government plans to enlist 110,000 young Kenyans without formal education into craft courses to equip them with skills for enterprise creation.
A second NYOTA component, Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL), will formally acknowledge skills and work experience gained through informal training, opening pathways to certification and employment.
Ruto said that these measures are designed to align education reform with youth economic empowerment, linking classroom transitions, teacher deployment, and budget expansion to practical opportunities for work and enterprise.
