Meru County schools have posted impressive results in the 2025 Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE), with Meru National High School and St Mary’s National Girls’ School, Igoji, recording high mean scores and strong university transition rates.
Meru National High School emerged among the top performers nationally, achieving a mean score of 9.97, up from 9.36 in 2024. Out of 545 candidates who sat the exam, 537 are expected to qualify for university admission, representing a 99 per cent transition rate.
The school’s performance marks a significant improvement and underscores its consistency in producing competitive results.
St Mary’s National Girls’ School, Igoji, also posted notable gains. The institution recorded a mean score of 9.123, compared to 8.4945 last year. Eight students attained straight As, while 71 others scored A‑. According to headmistress Florence Mutwiri, the results reflect steady progress in academic standards at the school.
With 94.9 per cent of its candidates expected to join universities, the school has reinforced its position as one of the leading girls’ institutions in the region.

While Meru National High School’s near‑perfect transition rate stands out, St Mary’s Igoji’s rise in mean score and number of top grades illustrates the broader gains being made across the county. Observers note that such performances are critical in shaping the county’s reputation as a hub of academic excellence, while also raising expectations for future cohorts.
Nationally, 270,000 candidates attained C+ and above, qualifying for direct university entry. Earlier, the President welcomed the performance, noting that a large group of candidates had qualified to join universities directly. He pointed to the figures as a reflection of steady progress in access to higher education across the country.
“We are impressed that out of the 993,000 candidates, 50 per cent of whom were girls, 270,000 attained C+ and above, securing a direct entry to university,” Ruto said.
