Butere Girls High School in Kakamega is ushering in a new era of leadership following the retirement of Chief Principal Madam Jenifer Omondi, whose tenure has been celebrated for both academic excellence and dominance in sports.
During her stewardship, the school achieved remarkable success in co‑curricular activities. The girls’ soccer team clinched three consecutive Kenya Secondary Schools Sports Association (KSSSA) national titles, while the basketball team matched that feat with three straight national championships. The basketball squad went further to secure a Federation of Eastern Africa Secondary Schools Sports Association (FEASSA) crown, cementing the school’s reputation on the regional stage.
Academically, Butere Girls maintained a steady upward trajectory, topping Kakamega County for five years in a row. Education stakeholders credit the strong performance to firm administrative leadership, effective teaching strategies, and a disciplined learning environment.

Madam Omondi leaves office widely praised by parents, alumni, and education observers for fostering a culture that balanced rigorous academics with co‑curricular achievement. Many describe her tenure as one of the most successful periods in the institution’s history.
She now hands over to Chief Principal Linda Zalo, who arrives from Tigoi Girls High School. Ms. Zalo brings with her a proven track record, and expectations are high that she will consolidate the gains made and guide the school into its next phase of growth.
As the transition unfolds, stakeholders remain optimistic that the standards set under Madam Omondi’s leadership will be sustained, even as Butere Girls charts a new path under fresh management.
