Education stakeholders in Chepalungu, Bomet County, have appealed to parents to ensure that every child reports back to school when learning resumes next week. They stressed that education is a fundamental right that must be accessed without interruption.

During a community engagement forum, Geoffrey Langat noted that Chepalungu has consistently lagged in education standards compared to other regions. He said reversing this trend requires parents to take responsibility for ensuring children remain in school. “For many years, our region has not performed well in education. This must change, and it begins with parents making sure every child is in class,” Langat stated.

Langat also cautioned students transitioning to senior secondary schools to avoid irresponsible behaviour and remain focused on their studies. He urged them to resist negative influences, emphasising that this stage of learning is critical for shaping their future.

In addition, Langat warned youths against drug and substance abuse, describing it as a serious threat to both individual progress and the wider economy. “Drug abuse is destroying our young people. It affects their health, their education, and their ability to contribute meaningfully to the economy,” he said.

Stakeholders drawn from different professions challenged elected leaders in the region to honour their campaign pledges, particularly those related to education development. One participant observed, “Education is the backbone of development. Leaders must invest in it and ensure schools have the support they need.”

As schools prepare to reopen, parents have voiced concerns about the rising cost of school fees and academic materials, urging government intervention to ease the financial burden on households.

Despite these challenges, community leaders reiterated that keeping children in school remains the most effective way to secure a brighter future for Chepalungu and the wider region.
