Professionals from South Mugirango have appealed to President William Ruto to direct the revival of Kisii University’s Nyangweta Campus, saying the institution would provide vital opportunities for students to pursue agricultural studies and contribute to food production in the country.

Led by Justin Okemwa, the group emphasised that agriculture remains the backbone of Kenya’s economy and expressed hope that the campus will soon be established to train young people into experts in the sector. “We are anxiously waiting for the campus to be set up here to teach our sons and daughters to become agriculture specialists,” Okemwa said.

The appeal came during a New Year get‑together party where the professionals pledged to avoid divisive politics and instead work with elected leaders to accelerate development in their constituency.

They also thanked President Ruto for showing confidence in their MP, Sylvanus Osoro, who hosted him in South Mugirango two days after Christmas. The President’s attendance at the Sylvanus Osoro Soccer Tournament was described as a demonstration of his commitment to promoting sports talent among Kenyan youth.

Area MP Osoro, who graced the meeting, assured residents that the President’s office, in collaboration with the Ministries of Education and Health, has already allocated funds to complete the construction of Kisii University Nyangweta Campus. He added that plans are underway to establish a new medical college and a modern hospital at Moticho Ward, which has sufficient land for the projects.

Residents further urged the MP to consult with the Cabinet Secretary for Education to upgrade Moticho Girls School by providing modern classrooms, laboratories and secure dormitories for learners.

The professionals also asked the MP to prioritise infrastructure development, particularly the construction and rehabilitation of roads leading to learning institutions. They noted that improved transport networks would ease movement for both teachers and students, especially during the rainy season.
