The National Government Constituency Development Fund (NG‑CDF) in Chepalungu has allocated Sh20 million to support college and university students through bursaries, in a bid to ease the financial strain on learners and their families.
Area Member of Parliament Victor Koech said the decision marks a shift from past practice, where students at all levels received equal bursary amounts despite facing different needs. “For many years, students at all levels have been receiving the same amount of bursary support, yet their needs are very different. College and university students face unique challenges that must be addressed,” Koech explained.
Speaking after meeting students at Olbutyo Secondary School, the MP noted that the separate allocation would help address the burden of higher education costs. He added that learners themselves would be involved in determining how the funds are shared to ensure fairness and transparency. “We want the students themselves to agree on the mode of sharing the funds. I am hopeful that the process will be above board and fair to everyone,” he said.

During the forum, students raised concerns about the current bursary disbursement formula, calling for a review to ensure allocations are both fair and adequate.
The bursary disbursement exercise officially began today, with distribution taking place at primary schools across the constituency under the supervision of education stakeholders.
