Machakos Deputy Governor Francis Mwangangi has called on the Ministry of Education (MoE) to fast‑track the placement of Grade 9 learners into their preferred senior schools before classes resume next week. He urged officials to guarantee a transparent, free and fair process, warning that delays and malpractice would disadvantage qualified students.
Speaking at Machakos People’s Park during the Vuka Festival, where thousands of youths gathered to usher in the New Year, Mr. Mwangangi said some learners had not yet secured placement despite meeting the required qualifications. “I urge the Ministry of Education to fast‑track placement of learners into their preferred schools and also ensure that the exercise is free,” he said.

The second edition of the county‑sponsored Vuka Festival drew over 15,000 attendees, showcasing local musical talent and youth creativity at the amphitheatre. Mr. Mwangangi, accompanied by several County Executive Members, said the event had boosted multiple sectors of the local economy, including hospitality, food vendors and transport, with boda boda and tuk tuk operators reporting brisk business.
“The Vuka Festival is empowering various sectors of the economy including boda bodas, musicians and the food industry. We are focused on youth development,” he said, adding that the festival provides a dignified platform for talent and enterprise in a serene environment.
Mr. Mwangangi reiterated that timely and credible Grade 9 placement is essential to learner progression under the Competency‑Based Curriculum, and urged education authorities to resolve outstanding cases promptly to ensure a smooth start to the school term.
