Bumula Member of Parliament Jack Wamboka has rallied students in higher learning institutions to take a more active role in shaping the future of education, even as he pledged stronger support for learners from disadvantaged backgrounds in his constituency.
Addressing a consultative forum with university and college students in Bumula, Wamboka stressed that young people must remain vigilant and organised to safeguard education gains, warning that rising costs and policy challenges continue to threaten access to quality learning. He said the meeting was designed to engage students on the state of education in the constituency, with a focus on affordability, access and quality for vulnerable families.
The legislator reminded students that their predecessors played a central role in pushing for reforms in Kenya’s education sector, noting that many of the opportunities available today were achieved through sacrifices made by earlier generations. He expressed concern that despite ongoing challenges such as inadequate funding, graduate unemployment and the high cost of living, many students have remained silent, allowing decisions that directly affect their future to be made without their input.
“Education rights are not granted automatically. Students must organise themselves, engage constructively and speak out on issues affecting their learning and future opportunities,” Wamboka said.
He also urged learners to embrace technology responsibly, pointing out that digital platforms can be powerful tools for education if used positively. He encouraged students to leverage social media to access resources, build networks and acquire skills that improve employability, cautioning that misuse of technology could undermine academic and professional growth.

On financing, Wamboka assured that his leadership is committed to ensuring no deserving learner is forced out of school due to lack of fees. He pledged that all needy students applying for bursaries in Bumula will receive support to continue their studies. “Education remains the most effective tool for social mobility. We are determined to strengthen bursary support so that every deserving student from a disadvantaged background can access education,” he said.
Wamboka reiterated that investment in education is vital for the long-term socio-economic development of Bumula and the country at large. He called for sustained collaboration between leaders, institutions and students to safeguard the future of learning.
