Kisumu Central Member of Parliament Dr Joshua Oron has unveiled plans to integrate street children into formal education and vocational training institutions, pledging full scholarships for those absorbed.
Speaking at Central Square in Kisumu’s CBD during a Christmas celebration his office organized for hundreds of street families, Dr Oron said the initiative seeks to restore dignity and opportunity to children who dropped out of school due to socio-economic and cultural challenges.
Under the noble programme, children will be enrolled at different school levels depending on where they left off, while others will join vocational and technical training centres to pursue courses such as welding, tailoring, and mechanics.
“It is wrong to demonize street children without addressing the root causes,” Dr Oron said, adding that many of them are bright and gifted but were forced out of classrooms by circumstances beyond their control.

The MP, who has been running similar rehabilitation efforts for 19 years, noted that several beneficiaries have already been transformed into responsible citizens. Dr Oron emphasized that the new initiative will ensure those placed in institutions of learning receive full scholarships to support their education.
Dr Oron highlighted the importance of nurturing talent among street children, saying the programme will not only provide education but also equip them with skills to earn a living and contribute positively to society.
During the Christmas event, street families were treated to meals throughout the day, including breakfast, lunch, and evening tea.
