The Kenya School of TVET (KSTVET) and Huawei Technologies Kenya have marked a major milestone in Kenya ICT capacity building, announcing the successful completion of the second phase of the national Train the Trainer program. The initiative is designed to strengthen digital skills and expand ICT training capacity across TVET institutions nationwide.
The ceremony, held on Monday, December 1, 2025, was officiated by Dr. Joseph Kanyi, Director of TVET, representing the Principal Secretary in the State Department for TVET.
A total of 65 lecturers completed the intensive 15-day program, which took them through advanced modules in Artificial Intelligence, Data Communication, Cloud, and Cybersecurity.
The training equipped participants with competencies in network fundamentals, IP routing and switching, WLAN technologies, network security, and data communication essentials skills that directly contribute to expanding Kenya ICT capacity building within TVET institutions.
The AI component introduced trainers to machine learning workflows, deep learning concepts, dataset processing, model training, and the application of AI in real-world industry environments.
Huawei also awarded each lecturer certification exam vouchers to support their move toward globally recognized ICT qualifications another boost to Kenya ICT capacity building efforts.
Speaking during the event, Dr. Kanyi highlighted the importance of the program in advancing the government’s Dual TVET model. He emphasized that the knowledge gained will ripple across institutions and communities, ultimately strengthening national competitiveness.

“This program is not just about technical skills. It is about preparing Kenya’s workforce for a rapidly evolving digital future,” said Dr. Kanyi.
Huawei and the State Department for TVET have collaborated since 2021, establishing 11 Huawei ICT Academies across the country. In 2024, KSTVET was officially recognized as the national Academy Support Centre further solidifying its leadership in Kenya ICT capacity building.
“Huawei is honoured to partner with the State Department for TVET in empowering lecturers with globally competitive ICT skills. Kenya is fast becoming a regional technology hub, and we remain committed to opening more opportunities for trainers and students,” he said.
He further encouraged more institutions to participate in the Huawei ICT Competition, which continues to expose Kenyan students to global platforms.
KSTVET noted that the initiative has significantly strengthened the institution’s capacity to deliver high-quality ICT training aligned with global standards. The graduating trainers will play a central role in driving digital transformation in TVET colleges a key pillar of Kenya ICT capacity building.
The State Department urged trainers to cascade their new knowledge to learners and communities, maintain accurate certification data, properly manage ICT academies, and submit regular progress reports.
Dr. Kanyi reaffirmed the government’s commitment to the partnership, adding that work was already underway to sign a new MoU to scale up ICT talent development across the country.
