The government has been urged to set aside at least 10 percent of the annual budget for research to accelerate the transformation of the Country.
Machakos Deputy Governor Francis Mwangangi said both the Counties and the National government should have a budget for research to help develop solutions to local problems.
Speaking at the Open University of Kenya graduation ceremony at the Konza Technopolis on Friday, Mwangangi said many institutions in the country were conducting research that was not helpful because it was poorly conducted.
“Today, we have so many institutions and students carrying out research, but where do they go? They are poorly done because they are poorly financed,” said Mr Mwangangi.

He said the country should increase funding for research and development, adding that since the Mwai Kibaki administration introduced free Primary Education, the country should now be moving towards achieving free university education.
“We started with Free Primary Education. We should now be moving to higher education being free. We should be talking of free quality education in Kenya,” said Mr Mwangangi.
He said the Open University of Kenya needs to work with the Council of Governors and the Ministry of Education so that the funds used to sponsor students can also sponsor County government employees pursuing further education.
