Kakamega County has launched Ksh30 Million to support needy learners pursuing skilled training in various County polytechnics for their fees.
Governor Fernandez Barasa while officiating the launch at the Kakamega County Polytechnic today morning said the bursary allocation will go a long way in supporting the learners achieve skilled training which is globally needed.
Barasa said the County was committed in ensuring that skills development among the young people was realized as it was key to their self-sustainability.
“My government takes technical learning very seriously and that is why we ensure that those needy trainees get sponsorship to continue with their education as technical knowhow is key in the running of our county,” he said
Our bursary, he added, targets learners from humble backgrounds across the county and my administration sees that financial constraints does not hinder the bright and needy students from pursuing their technical and vocational training.
“The President is on record propagating for more enrolment of technical and vocational training as the country transforms itself into an industrial one where technical skills is key for both employment and self-sustainability purposes.” said Barasa.

He said with the supporting of the technical education, the county and country at large was opening doors for more opportunities for the young people and creating avenues of wealth creation and increasing revenue across the board.
“This is an important county function especially to our polytechnic learners even as counties have had challenges with the Controller of Budget Margaret Nyakang’o, on bursary, we are able to launch this issuance for all the county polytechnics’ needy learners” he revealed.
At the same time, the governor stated that starting next year counties will be remitting Ksh.150Million to secondary schools as bursary.
This is after the counties signed the intergovernmental participatory agreement with the ministry of education.
“Though secondary school bursary is not a devolved function of the counties, we have struck an intergovernmental participatory agreement (IPA) and ministry of education (MOE) that will even grade ten also benefitting from the allocation starting January 2026.” He said
He called on all the members of the county assembly (MCA) to review their budgetary allocation to cover the grade 10 learners as beneficiaries too.
