A cloud of sorrow has engulfed the education and religious fraternity following the death of His Lordship Bishop Emeritus Philip Sulumeti, a towering figure in the Catholic Church and a great champion of education in Western Kenya.
Bishop Sulumeti, who served as the Bishop of Kakamega Diocese for decades, is remembered not only as a spiritual leader but also as a visionary who transformed education in the region. Many schools, hospitals, and institutions bear his name — a testament to his lifelong dedication to empowering communities through learning. To many in the Luhya nation, the name Sulumeti is synonymous with education.
His belief that education was a tool for both spiritual and social transformation saw him establish and support numerous Catholic-sponsored schools. Under his leadership, the Church invested heavily in educational infrastructure, teacher training, and the moral upbringing of learners.

In his condolence message, Shinyalu MP Fred Ikana expressed deep sorrow and paid tribute to the late Bishop’s immense contribution to the nation. He described Bishop Sulumeti as a shepherd of faith, wisdom, and humility — a man who lived to uplift others through service and knowledge.
“The late Bishop Sulumeti devoted his life to shaping souls and nurturing minds. His work in the education sector transformed thousands of lives across generations,” Ikana said.
Education stakeholders in Kakamega and beyond have also hailed Bishop Sulumeti for his instrumental role in promoting girl-child education and establishing mission schools that have produced many of the region’s leading professionals. His leadership, they said, went beyond the pulpit — he was a mentor, educator, and a voice of conscience for the community.
Even in retirement, Bishop Sulumeti continued to inspire teachers and learners through his emphasis on discipline, excellence, and moral integrity.
As the Catholic community and the education sector mourn his passing, many agree that the Church and the country have lost a true pillar of faith and knowledge. His enduring legacy — of love, faith, and learning — will continue to shape generations to come.
