TSC Chairman hails teachers for shaping Kenya’s future and integrity

Teachers Service Commission (TSC) Chairman Dr. Jamleck Muturi has praised Kenyan teachers for their vital role in building a strong, value-driven and globally competitive nation.

Speaking during the 2025 World Teachers’ Day celebrations in Kasarani Indoor Arena, Muturi said the event was not just ceremonial but a global recognition of the transformative power of educators.

He described teaching as a noble calling that shapes minds, nurtures values and illuminates the path to a better society.

“Teachers remain the architects of our future, the custodians of knowledge and thought-bearers of values that define our national character. From classrooms in bustling cities to remote villages, teachers continue to plant seeds of empathy, integrity and resilience in learners.” Muturi said

The TSC Chairman highlighted this year’s theme, Recasting Teaching as a Collaborative Profession, as a reminder of the need to view educators as part of a shared learning community.

He urged schools and education stakeholders to strengthen professional networks, encourage mentorship and foster cultures that value teamwork and innovation.

Muturi also recognized the sacrifices made by teachers, quoting Mustapha Kamel: “A good teacher is like a candle, it consumes itself to light the way of others.” He said teachers often give their time and energy selflessly to ensure students grow and succeed, even when it comes at personal cost.

He warned that Kenya faces increasing moral and social challenges, but said teachers remain the country’s strongest defence, “As we face societal challenges, moral erosion and digital destruction, teachers remain our strongest defence against the darkness,” he said.

Muturi praised educators for instilling honesty, hard work, integrity, resilience, patriotism and compassion in learners, saying these virtues are essential for building a just and prosperous nation.

Muturi added that the Commission is committed in elevating the teaching profession through global exposure, through

“TSC’s new policy on teacher engagement abroad positions Kenyan educators as global ambassadors of competence and integrity. The initiative has opened opportunities for teachers to serve across Africa and beyond, sharing their expertise and promoting Pan-African solidarity.” He said

He further celebrated teachers embracing digital skills, noting that some have been accredited by Microsoft as global trainers, saying their recognition shows Kenya’s growing strength in educational innovation.

Muturi also commended a Kenyan teacher recently crowned African Best Teacher of the Year, saying her achievement symbolizes the country’s excellence in education.

In his closing remarks, Muturi reaffirmed his admiration for the teaching fraternity. He said teachers are not merely transmitters of knowledge but the foundation upon which Kenya’s progress rests. He added that their commitment to nurturing values and innovation continues to illuminate the nation’s path toward development.
