The Kenya Women Senators Association (KEWOSA) has launched a countywide intervention in Busia following a disturbing rise in adolescent pregnancies, HIV infections, and sexual and gender-based violence (SGBV).

The campaign, led by Senator Veronica Maina, was unveiled on Monday under the Senate Mashinani initiative and aims to mobilize communities, support students, and push for coordinated action.

According to Senator Maina, Busia recorded 65,540 teenage pregnancies between 2016 and 2024, accounting for 28 percent of all first antenatal care visits. HIV infections among adolescents aged 10 to 19 rose from 120 in 2019 to 135 in 2024, with an estimated 2,400 young people currently living with HIV. SGBV cases surged from 66 in 2016 to 480 in 2024, including 171 pregnancies linked to defilement.

“These numbers paint a worrying picture,” said Senator Maina, noting that 69.3 percent of Busia residents live below the poverty line, a factor that increases vulnerability to exploitation and school dropouts.

KEWOSA senators began with direct engagements at St. James Kwang’amor and St. James Nasewa Secondary Schools. Discussions focused on reproductive health, personal safety, and legal protections. Learners were also provided with menstrual hygiene kits and boxer shorts to promote dignity and school retention.

Senator Maina reminded students of their rights under the Sexual Offences Act (2006), which criminalizes sexual activity with minors and prescribes penalties including life imprisonment.

The campaign ended with a multi-stakeholder dialogue at PCEA Church in Busia Town, bringing together county officials, police, judiciary representatives, teenage mothers, religious leaders, and boda boda associations with residents unanimously calling for a coordinated, multi-sectoral response to address the root causes of adolescent vulnerability.
