The government has announced sweeping reforms to upgrade teacher training standards in response to the demands of the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC).
Education CS Julius Ogamba said all P1 and ECDE certificate teachers will be required to upgrade to the Diploma level. At the same time, entry grades for Diploma programmes will be standardised to a minimum of C (plain) in the KCSE, with subject-specific requirements, especially in STEM fields.
He spoke when he officially opened the Teacher Education Conference for Education stakeholders, held recently at the Mombasa Beach Hotel in Mombasa County.

“The Ministry of Education has prioritised upgrading entry requirements for pre-service teacher education programmes to ensure better preparedness aligned with curriculum reforms,” said Ogamba.
He also revealed plans to establish new institutions dedicated to professional development.
“The recommendation on the establishment of Kenya Teacher Training College and Kenya School of Teacher and Education Management aims to coordinate pre-service and in-service training, including mandatory one-year retooling programmes for teachers who graduated before 2023,” he explained.
