The Kenya Medical Training College (KMTC) has officially taken full ownership of the Safe Phlebotomy Course, marking a significant shift from a partner-supported initiative to a sustainable, institutionally led program aimed at strengthening Kenya’s health workforce.
The handover ceremony, held at KMTC Headquarters in Nairobi, brought together key development partners, including Amref Health Africa, the U.S. Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), and the Ministry of Health (MoH), all of whom have played a pivotal role in building the program over the past decade.
The collaboration has helped improve the quality of blood sampling, enhanced diagnostic safety, and increased protection for healthcare workers across Kenya.
KMTC Chief Executive Officer Dr Kelly Oluoch expressed appreciation to the partners for their long-standing support, which enabled a smooth transition of the program into KMTC’s academic framework.
“We are grateful to Amref, CDC, and the Ministry of Health for their unwavering support in building this program. The handover marks a new chapter as we fully integrate phlebotomy training into our curriculum,” said Dr Oluoch.

He also highlighted that recent investment in equipping phlebotomy laboratories across KMTC campuses will boost the sustainability and quality of training, aligning with the institution’s mission of producing highly skilled and safe health professionals.
The Safe Phlebotomy Program will now be delivered using a hybrid learning model, combining face-to-face sessions with e-learning modules hosted on the Ministry of Health’s Virtual Academy platform. This approach is expected to broaden access, increase efficiency, and standardise practical skills training across the country.
Through support from the CDC and Amref, the program has already achieved the digitisation of training content, the Development of a standardised curriculum, and the training of 30 KMTC lecturers as Master Trainers, ensuring consistent and high-quality delivery.
The partners lauded KMTC’s readiness to champion the program independently and acknowledged the Ministry of Health’s strategic role in leveraging digital platforms to expand reach and impact.
