Students, PWDs benefit as Governor Wavinya distributes devices, Bursaries in Machakos

Students and People with Disabilities, (PWDs) in Machakos County benefited from bursaries and assistive devices worth Ksh14.6 Million distributed by Governor Wavinya Ndeti in a drive aimed at empowerment inclusion in the society.

Speaking at Machakos Town Social Hall, Governor Ndeti said her government’s support towards PWDs had increased progressively since she assumed office three years ago.

She said her government is keen on building an inclusive society by supporting the Education, health, nutrition and general well-being of the PWDs.

During the event, Governor Wavinya handed 74 wheelchairs, including customized ones for children with cerebral palsy,50 white canes, 50 crutches, 36 walking frames, and 50 walking canes, noting that these devices would not only ease mobility challenges but also restore independence and confidence to beneficiaries.

Education for differently abled children has also received significant attention under her leadership. According to Governor Wavinya, over the last three years, bursary allocations for PWD students have steadily increased: 2022/2023: 176 bursaries worth Ksh670,000, 2023/2024: 256 bursaries worth Ksh875,000, 2024/2025: 1,041 bursaries worth Ksh4.4 million.

‎“This is a clear commitment that every child deserves the opportunity to learn, grow, and thrive regardless of ability,” the Governor said.

In addition, the county has distributed food and non-food items to all registered PWD institutions during the festive season, established the Machakos County Persons with Disabilities Board to manage table funds, and set aside resources for vocational training, education, and economic empowerment programs.

Governor Wavinya urged county departments, private sector players, and development partners to join hands in making Machakos more inclusive, noting that true progress comes through collaboration.
