Maasai Mara University has hosted the first-ever Jukwaa la Wasomi forum, a new platform established by the Ministry of Interior and National Administration to strengthen security within institutions of higher learning.

The forum brought together administrators, security agencies, and student leaders to discuss how to safeguard learning environments and prevent emerging threats.

The meeting united five key institutions in Narok County—Maasai Mara University, Maasai Mara Vocational Training College, Narok Kenya Medical Training College, Narok West Technical Training College, and Narok Teachers’ Training College.

Each institution sent representatives, including Deans of Students, public relations officers, and student council members, alongside county security officials.

Narok County Commissioner Reuben Lotiatia, who chairs the County Security and Intelligence Committee, led the discussions.

He reminded students that discipline and good conduct are critical during their academic life and beyond.

Lotiatia stressed that a certificate of good conduct is now a key requirement for many employers and warned that students risk jeopardising their future if they engage in criminal activity.

The county commissioner also urged students to remain vigilant within campuses, identify and report suspicious individuals, and expose drug peddlers who target learning institutions.

He further cautioned against involvement in divisive politics, noting that educational spaces should remain neutral grounds for learning and personal growth.

“Our institutions of higher learning must be safe havens for education, not breeding grounds for crime or unrest. We encourage students to be proactive in addressing security challenges,” he said.

The university’s Director of Marketing, Dr Edward Kateyia, represented the Vice Chancellor Peninah Aloo-Obudho, who formally welcomed participants.

He acknowledged that institutions continue to grapple with security issues, ranging from petty crime to drug abuse, and encouraged student leaders to raise concerns openly so that solutions can be found collectively.

Deans of students from the five institutions, led by Adan Mohammed of Maasai Mara University, were present, alongside the university’s acting public relations officer, Anne Keton and Huduma Centre manager Naserian Katampoi.

The security officers and three student representatives from each council also took part in the discussions.

The forum created an open platform where students, administrators, and security personnel could exchange views.

Participants agreed that cooperation between stakeholders is essential in creating secure campuses where learning can thrive.

Organisers said the Jukwaa la Wasomi will become a regular engagement platform aimed at nurturing responsibility, discipline, and safety across Narok’s higher education institutions.
