Education Stakeholders call for KCSE grades upgrade for teachers training

The education stakeholders drawn from the Education Ministry, Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development, Kenya Post-Primary Education Teachers, (KUPPET), Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) and University Lecturers have called for the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education, KCSE grades for students enrolling in Teachers Training Colleges.

Speaking during the Education Conference for Education stakeholders held at Mombasa Beach Hotel in Mombasa County recently, the stakeholders said that for the Education system to be progressive in the country, then students who score Grade C- in Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE ) should be allowed to upgrade to do certificate with KNEC to attain C plain which is allowed for a Diploma course.

They said that for those wanting to pursue degree should also upgrade to C+, adding that teaching in Secondary schools one should have scored grade C+ in KCSE and should have also scored a C+ in two teaching subjects.

Professor John Aluko Orodho, Associate Professor of Curriculum Studies, Research and Statistics who is also Research Coordinator at Kenyatta University, said that Kenya Qualification Development Authority allows students who scored low grades in KCSE to upgrade their grades.

He added that the Authority allows students with low grades , like E,D-D plain and D+ to join TVET to acquire basic technical skills in different fields to start with Certificates in Artisans and then rise through to University.

Addressing the stakeholders, Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Ogamba stated that the government has launched new Education policies in the country meant to make it look better than before.

Ogamba urged education stakeholders in the country to give the education sector great attention to enable to move to the next level of development.

“The government will also ensure better Teacher Training in the country and Teacher employment respectively”, he explained.

He added that the government is committed in ensuring that it addresses the challenges currently affecting the Education Sector in the country,
