More than 54,000 young learners across Bomet County are benefitting from the county government’s school feeding programme, which supplies milk to over 1,300 Early Childhood Development Education (ECDE) centres every week.
County officials say the initiative is helping to improve nutrition, increase school attendance, and enhance concentration levels in the classroom.
This week, the Department of Education and Vocational Training received milk supplies for two days of consumption — Tuesday and Thursday for onward delivery across all 25 wards.
The consignments are being distributed to each ECDE centre using selected boda boda saccos to ensure timely delivery even in remote areas.
Chief Officer for Education and Vocational Training, Dr. John Keter, on Monday, oversaw the arrival and distribution of milk at Longisa Ward and Nyongores Ward.
He praised the sub-county and ward education coordinators for their efficient handling and processing of deliveries, ensuring the milk reaches centres on time and in good condition.
According to Dr Keter, the programme is already making a tangible impact.
“We are witnessing healthier and happier children who can focus better in class. This is an investment in our future generation,” he said.
He said that Governor Prof Hillary Barchok’s administration has prioritised the programme as part of its broader agenda to support education and social welfare in Bomet.

The county official noted that by providing milk and other nutritional support, the initiative enhances physical and mental development while alleviating the financial burden on parents.
“The programme also supports local livelihoods by working with boda boda saccos for last-mile delivery, creating jobs and promoting community ownership,” he remarked.
The officials are considering expanding the programme to include complementary food items in the future.
Parents and teachers across Bomet have welcomed the initiative, saying it provides a strong foundation for improved academic performance and better health outcomes for children.
Stakeholders have also praised the county’s commitment to consistency and transparency in supply and distribution.
