The Kenya Institute of Special Needs Education, (KISE) tutors and the Special Needs Education Curriculum Support Officers, (CSO-SNE) have welcomed the higher job group promise made by the President William Ruto to teachers during the last Walimu na Rais forum at State House, Nairobi.
Speaking to Education News, SNE tutors and officers expressed their joy over the President’s pronouncement on a higher job group.
“For the first time since independence, the President has recognized the huge work we have when dealing with learners with special needs,” said John, an officer in charge of special needs in one of the sub counties in Northern Kenya.

He further said that they are in charge of sub counties which are vast and yet their job group doesn’t match their status as sub County bosses.
The officers further said that it had become hard for the employer to award them special allowance that the teachers in special schools and units enjoy yet they were involved in learners’ assessment.

“Award of one grade will go a long way in motivating us,” stated an elated Faith from Nyanza region. The same joy was shared by KISE staff. They said that special needs education is a technical area that only those with passion can deliver. CSO-SNE enter service at Job Group C5. This means, they will now move to Job Group D1 after the president’s pronouncement.
During the weekend engagement with 10,000 teachers leadership that was drawn from Knut, kuppet, Kusnet and Kepsha at state house, the president in one of the response acknowledged the challenges special needs education teachers go through as they handle learners of different categories of disabilities.
KUSNET requested for two grades as they had been left out since 2008.The President in his response promised one grade higher.
There are 751 special schools and 2713 integrated and special units in Kenya catering for over 100,000 learners both in primary and secondary schools in Kenya.
