The Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) has welcomed the recent President Ruto’s pronouncement to promote 50, 000 teachers to address the issue of teacher shortages in the country.

Addressing the press today in Bomet, KNUT Vice National Chairperson Malel Langat said the move will motivate teachers and have an impact on the academic outcome.

“This move will not only motivate our teachers but also go a long way in improving academic performance across the country,” Langat said.

Malel also hailed the recent Walimu na Rais forum which brought in 10, 000 tutors to the State House for consultative meeting,  describing the engagement as unprecedented, noting that it marked a new chapter in the relationship between the government and educators.

“This was a historic meeting. No such engagement between the presidency and teachers’ representatives has ever taken place since independence,” said Langat

Langat expressed confidence that all agreements made during the meeting would be honored and fully implemented; a move he believes will have a far-reaching impact on the education sector.

“We are optimistic that everything that was agreed upon will be implemented without fail,” he stated.

On the issue of teacher employment, Langat praised the current administration, saying the Kenya Kwanza government had demonstrated commitment to addressing staffing shortages in schools.

“Kenya Kwanza’s record speaks for itself. As a union, we are satisfied with the progress made in recruiting more teachers,” he noted.

Addressing concerns over capitation delays and funding challenges in schools, Langat expressed hope that the government would soon resolve the matter.

“We are confident that the problems surrounding capitation will be dealt with promptly. As a union, we fully support all efforts aimed at promoting education in the country,” he added.

To formalize the commitments made, a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed between the government and teachers’ unions immediately following the State House meeting.

The union now hopes that continued collaboration will pave the way for a stronger, more inclusive education system for future generations.
