After years of struggling with water shortages, Hossana Primary School in Narok County is celebrating a major milestone following the successful drilling of a borehole within the school compound.
The development is expected to significantly improve hygiene and health conditions for both students and teachers, who have long endured the effects of water scarcity.
Deputy Head Teacher Susan Njoroge expressed her gratitude and relief during an address to the media.
“This is a great day for our school. We are truly thankful to the donors who made this possible,” she said. “For a long time, our students were forced to walk long distances in search of water, missing valuable class time in the process.”
Njoroge added that the school has been operating without enough water storage facilities, and during dry seasons, the situation would become desperate.

“Once we ran out of rainwater, things became very difficult,” she explained. “We didn’t have the capacity to purchase water, so students had no choice but to fetch it themselves.”
She was accompanied by fellow teachers, who welcomed the project as a turning point for the school community.
Njoroge also revealed plans for a new vegetable gardening project, set to be launched soon. “With a reliable water source, we’ll now be able to start a school garden that will benefit the students nutritionally and educationally,” she said.
Meanwhile, students at the school could not contain their excitement over the new development.
“We are very happy,” said one pupil. “Now we won’t waste time looking for water. We can concentrate on our studies.”
The borehole is seen as a critical step toward creating a safer, cleaner, and more conducive learning environment for the school’s growing population.
